Weekly Skates
Sunday No-drop Road Skate in RTP
This skate is open to beginner/intermediate skaters that are comfortable
skating on the road. Most roads are low traffic, but there may be some
short distances where there is more traffic. The course will have hills,
so skaters should be able to brake effectively. Helmets are required,
other protection is up to the individual.
Time: Meet at 8:15 am, start skating at 8:30 am
Place: Greenwood Commons shopping center, Durham
Distance: 25 miles
Pace: Depends on who shows up. This is a no-drop skate, so we
skate at a speed everyone is comfortable with.
Tuesday Advanced Road Skate in Apex
This skate is open to advanced skaters that can maintain a 13 mph average on
a hilly course for 26-32 miles. Most roads are low traffic, but there may
be some short distances where there is more traffic. The course will have
hills, so skaters should be able to brake effectively. Helmets are
required, other protection is up to the individual.
Time: Meet at 5:45 pm, start skating at 6:00 pm
Place: Cycling Spoken Here, Apex
Distance: 26-32 miles
Pace: 13-15 mph average (the cyclists ride at 18+ mph, so faster
skaters can skate with them instead)
Wednesday No-drop Trail Skate in Durham
This skate is open to all skaters, and beginners are encouraged to attend.
We skate on the American Tobacco Trail, which was built on an old railroad bed, so it is relatively flat. Any hills are very gradual, although a couple are long enough that you can pick up some speed. Braking skills are required. As with all our group skates, helmets are required. Additional protection is up to the individual.
Time: Meet at 6:15 pm, start skating at 6:30 pm
Place: Southpoint Crossing shopping center, Durham
Distance: 13-19 miles
Pace: Depends on who shows up. This is a no-drop skate, so we
skate at a speed everyone is comfortable with.
Thursday Track Skating at Reedy Creek Elementary School in Cary
This skate is open to all skaters, beginner to advanced. The track is a
safe place to work on drills, learn how to brake, etc. Advanced skaters
will often use the track for interval training. Since the track is flat
and enclosed, braking skills are not necessarily required. Helmets are
required, other protection is up to the individual.
Time: Start skating as people show up, first people get there usually
between 5:30 pm and 6:00 pm.
Place: Reedy Creek Schools track, Cary
Distance: Varies, we just skate until dark usually.
Pace: Varies according to the individual. The great thing about
the track is that everyone can do their own thing.
Saturday Advanced Road Skate in Apex
This is a long version of the Tuesday evening skate. This skate is open to advanced skaters that can maintain a 13 mph average on a hilly course for 30-60 miles. Most roads are low traffic, but there may be some short distances where there is more traffic. The course will have
hills, so skaters should be able to brake effectively. Helmets are
required, other protection is up to the individual.
Time: Meet at 9:45 am, start skating at 10:00 am
Place: Apex Elementary School, Apex
Distance: 30-60 miles, depending on the week
